Management tools are usually considered as vile and negligible objects. Unthought of, they become invisible. And yet, their influence is considerable.
Against common sense, the authors argue that philosophy is fundamental to the development of the theory of organizations on which the various conceptualizations of management tools are based. On the one hand, theorizing efforts reflect philosophical presuppositions that act as a framing of what is possible, thinkable and desirable in the conduct of research activities. On the other hand, philosophers' thoughts are the source of conceptual distinctions that open up new potentialities for theorizing and action.
To support this conviction, specialists particularly recognized in the management sciences have come together around Patrick Gilbert and Damien Mourey to produce a unique book. Their contributions, guided by a pedagogical concern, convincingly show that the thought of some great philosophers constitutes a promising stimulus for understanding management tools in their relationship to organizations.
